Patent Office Prints-Free

Have you seen art prints that have the patent schematics and diagrams for inventions?  They are cool!  And did you know you can access them for free?  The images are usually low-quality PDFs, but with a few tweaks in your photo editor, you can adjust the resolution and add pixels! (If you have a Mac, you can use Preview to Adjust Size.  You can use apps like Photoshop, Gimp or Paint too-there are plenty of tutorials out there, just search for resizing).  Most of the time pictures for the internet are 72 pixels per inch.  If you want to print them, they need to be about 300 pixels per inch.

If you want to find patent prints, just do a Google image search.  When you find one you like, look for the patent number.  Go to the US Patent Office site and do a search for the patent number.  Look for the button that says Images and click it to get the PDF.

I've been a science educator for over 2 decades, so I really like science-y things.  I grabbed some fun patent images of lab ware and I'm going to put them up in my office. If you wanted large-scale size prints, you could use Staples to do Engineering Prints--they are very inexpensive and perfect for black and white prints.

You could look for prints for :

Musical instruments
Science equipment
Sports gear
Machines
Christmas
Atari
Sewing
Clocks
Fireman or Police gear
Trains
Camera
Shoes
Bikes

Have fun!

Hymn Cards

Music is such an amazing gift.  We use music to celebrate, to remember, to cheer, to inspire, to heal, to contemplate, to feel.  At church, I often find that the sermon found in the text of the hymn may be more meaningful and applicable to me than the one given at the pulpit.  As a choral singer, I know a lot of hymns.  When I'm at church, I rarely need to look at the hymnal, since I know most of the songs in our book.  I also know lots of hymns from other faiths or even hymns that used to be in our hymn book.  Last year on a trip to Magnolia Farms, I saw some really sweet stationary sets that had phrases from hymns printed on them.  I was inspired by those so I took my love of hymns and my love of printables and made my own set.

The images are made so that you could print them as big as 8.5 x 11, but I think they'd be ideal as a small 4x6 print (from the photo center at Costco or Sam's) to put in a frame and change it out from time to time.  I also thought they might be nice as a card to a friend in need, or someone who you wanted to send a note just to say you were thinking about them.

The watercolor floral graphics are from a site called AngieMakes.com--you can use her work as long as you are not selling things.  I made lots of variations in the folder--so you can print them for personal use, but please do not sell my work.

Faux Canvas Wall Art

As part of my living room redecorating I put up a new shelf, and then I had to figure out what would go on the shelf and on the rest of the wall.  I spent lots of time surfing Pinterest for wall art ideas, for quotes etc...  I finally decided that I needed a piece that was about 2 feet across and about 30 inches long (I could have probably done closer to 3 feet...maybe next time).  When I looked at stores for art, I didn't find what I wanted.  I considered buying a canvas at the craft store and using paint and my vinyl cutter.  But I thought maybe I could do a faux canvas instead--and for less!

I have been wanting to try out the Engineering prints from Staples since I read about a blogger who did a large print of the Death Star for her boys' room.  The engineering prints are inexpensive, but they are in black and white and lower resolution.  For the one I did, it cost about $3.50 (I uploaded the .jpg and an hour later got a call from Staples that it was ready for pick up).

Next, I had to figure out how to make the photocopy look like it was canvas.  I like the wrapped canvas look, so I decided I needed something that was about 1 inch thick. I thought about foam core board or cardboard, but I'd have to put layers together.  I considered plywood or particle board (and if I had had a scrap big enough in my shed I might had gone that route).  Then I landed on rigid foam insulation--cheap, easy to haul home and cut! I didn't want a big sheet of it, but luckily, Home Depot sells it in small 2x2 and 2x4 panels.  I chose the 1" thick and it was about $3.50.

So, I brought home my print and my foam.  I used a straightedge to trim the foam and sprayed the surface with adhesive.  I centered the print over the foam and carefully smoothed it down.  I cut the corners of the paper at an angle and flipped the whole thing over and sprayed a bit more adhesive on the foam edges and the paper.  I slowly and carefully wrapped the paper around the edge and the back.  It looked a lot like a wrapped package.

To get the illusion of canvas, I used a big paintbrush (the super cheap bristle brush from the Dollar Store) and dry brushed a bit of Modge Podge in long sweeping strokes both vertically and horizontally.  Don't use much of the glue--dab it on the brush, tap most of it off on a rag or paper towel and then lightly brush (if you get heavy handed with the liquid glue, the thin paper will wrinkle up).

Since the foam is so light, I used a loop of twine and some duct tape to make the hanger (tie a knot in the end so the twine doesn't slide out of the tape).

For my quote, I went with Robert Frost's The Road Not Taken.  We had sung it at choir a couple months ago and it has just stuck with me.

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

It will come-Inspirational printable

I like a good inspirational quote to hang up where I'm sure to see it around my house.  The bathroom mirror, the door out to the garage, the mantle in the living room.  This quote is from runner Meb Keflezighi, the guy who won the Boston Marathon in 2014 (the first American male to do so in about 30 years, and at age 39 one of the oldest).  No doubt, its a good quote for marathon running inspiration--but I think it works for the day-to-day stuff too.

The link should take you directly to a downloadable file. I generally print mine up to fit an 8x10 frame.

Teacher Appreciation Day

My career is in the field of education--and I work with really wonderful teachers!  Today is teacher appreciation day (part of Teacher Appreciation Week).  In my department, we "try" to not do edible items and since there are so many teachers, we keep it really low cost.  We are giving our teachers a highlighter with this little tag at our staff meeting.  If you have a great teacher who needs an extra "thank you"--maybe this will work for you too!  Actually, the tags are generic enough that it works for lots of other people too!

Sincere thanks, no matter how simply given, are always appreciated!

Appreciation Marquee for Administrative Assistant Day

Marquee clip art found here.  Font is Rockwell Extra Bold

This week is designated as Administrative Professional's week (formerly known as Secretary's week).  As a thank you to the many wonderful folks in my office who help me get my job done, I wanted to take in a small gift and note.  I thought I'd print up these theater marquee style notes, sign a quick thank you and attach them to a bag of microwave popcorn.  Could work for teacher appreciation week, boss's day or any other thank you!  You could add it to a large tub and make it a movie night gift too.

To grab the file (4 cards on a sheet), just click and look for the file titled Appreciation Marquee

Christmas Handel Messiah Printable

Pin It I was singing at the Christmas devotional for church and we did For Unto Us a Child is Born from Handel's Messiah--which is an awesome piece of music.  (You can check it out here)  I thought it would be a great piece to use for my Christmas art in my seasonal frame on the mantel.  Although truth be told, its been less seasonal this year and more...oh, its probably time to change up the frame, its not Easter any more.  So, if you are looking for a quick way to add some of the real meaning of Christmas to your decorations, give this one a go.  I printed it 8x10, but the file size is big enough that it should be able to print 11x14 without pixelating.  Once you click the link, find the print called Handel Chalkboard.  Merry Christmas!

Travel Printable

Its no secret to my friends and family that I like to travel.  I'm a fan of going to familiar places over and over as well as exploring new ones.  I love Disneyland and the beach and food and getting stamps in my passport.  I'm also getting more adventurous--Segway tour in Rome; awesome!  Cooking lesson in Florence; highly recommend.  Surfing in Hawaii; wow, there is some cardio!  I'm in the midst of changing up some of the pictures and decorations in my living room and thought I'd do something in a frame about travel.  I found this quote (attributed to someone named Susan Sontag) and thought it fit my personality.  I've made 3 versions--one with a map as the background, one in sparkly gold and the other in a more subtle gold.  The high resolution jpgs will print nicely on shiny photo paper.  Click the Google link below for the high rez files (they are called Travel Print).

Christmas Water Bottle Labels

I enjoy singing, especially with a choir and especially at Christmastime.  I like to give a little something to the ladies I sing with, but none of us really NEED anything, and even small items can get expensive when you buy 50 of them.  So, this year I thought why not a bottle of water?  We're singers, so we are always needing a swig of water during rehearsal.  I made some cute labels, bought a flat of water from Costco and included a note that I made and printed on the computer to go along with the water.  I've seen the labels go around other containers too (salsa, candy etc...) might make for a nice neighbor or teacher gift.  They are sized to print on a regular 8.5 x 11 piece of paper.  Just print, cut the strips and tape them around the bottle.

You can download the labels on my site, just look for the files called "bottle" in the list.

Cleaning Out

Do you ever walk into a room in your house and just wonder "where did all this stuff come from?"  I do.  I know I'm supposed to get rid of something in my closet if I bring something new home, but I don't (or I plan to and forget).  So I've got way more stuff than I need and I'm not waiting until the New Year or Spring to get started on getting rid of it.  I saw several other blog posts on keeping your de-cluttering process small and manageable.  I'm not even planning at organizing stuff--just getting rid of stuff.  I suspect the organization will happen pretty much by itself when I don't have items towering or falling out of the closet.

So, I sat down and made a list of places in my house that could probably use a de-junking.  The list is LONG.  But that is ok.  I'm not going to make myself do a space every day, but I did make the spaces small enough that I can do one in a reasonable amount of time.

Supplies I'll need:
Lots of old grocery bags or trash bags
Camera/paper pencil to document items I'm donating for tax purposes

Anybody else want to try it?

Harry Potter Day of Fun

Each summer I do a day of fun with my brothers' kids.  I used to take the kids somewhere fun/educational--but as the number of kids has grown-I've simplified.  The kids don't care about fancy or expensive stuff, so I don't stress myself over minutia. For one brother's kids, it was a day of games,  for another brother, it was a trip to the park with his kids.

After lunch out and a stop at the grocery store we headed home for games, movie and snacks.  This year's theme was Harry Potter.  Our games included Pin the Scar on Harry Potter, Bingo and a Table Quidditch.  I also have Scene It Harry Potter and we made a "Who Am I?" game where the kids drew a name out of a hat and had to describe/impersonate the character (Kinda a mix of charades/20 questions).

For Pin the Scar on Harry Potter I did a search for a simple Harry Potter outline (less ink for my computer).  I saved the image and inserted it into an Excel document.  I stretched the image to make it 2 pages across and 2 pages long.  When you print, it will print out on 4 pieces of paper, which you'll need to trim and tape together.  I found my image here

For the lightning bolt scar, I used a sheet of return address labels.  Click the image to download the PDF if you want to use them (you could probably just draw some on masking tape or other stickers).  Look for the Harry Potter files after you click.

https://sites.google.com/site/theprojectspot/downloads

Table Quidditch was fun.  I made the ring stands with dowels, plastic tubing and duct tape.  If you poke around Google images you'll see much fancier versions (I rummaged through my garden shed and found all the stuff, you could also use a hanger, or pipe cleaners).  Click the image below to download the PDF of the rules/instructions (look for the Harry Potter files). Note:  I made the instructions before we played--with kids, it was better to play only to 50 points.  We also taped the cups to the table.  We played as teams (one match we were Slytherin vs. Griffindor).

https://sites.google.com/site/theprojectspot/downloads

For the movie, I picked up snacks and made some really simple labels.  Magic Wands (licorice), Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans, Gummy Frogs and Potter Popcorn.  We enjoyed the first Harry Potter movie together.  You can use the labels I made here.  For the soda, I used the cute 2 liter bottle labels that I found here (loved the site, but her food labels didn't line up with what I wanted to serve).

We had a great time together.  During the movie we all had our magic wands out and did all the spells along with Harry et al :)
